I have had a colonoscopy done myself a few years ago. It is a very easy procedure. Before you know it, it’s over and done with.The prep was hard though. It was not a fun experience. You have to completely flush your body. You can receive this in a few ways. They have a few liquids, but they don’t taste all too well. I took the pills. Your stomach and intestines will be so empty, all you will want to do is eat! There are a lot of food commercials on these days. Best advice, take a book in the bathroom. You’ll need to get there quick! Like I said, the actual procedure is very simple. You will go to the facility a few hours before the procedure. They will ask a few medical questions. It doesn’t say if you are male or female, but know the date of your last menstrual cycle. Not sure if you are having general anesthesia (where you are completely put out) or the ‘twighlight’ anesthesia (where you are awake, but feel very relaxed) The IV is simple, and quick. That was the worst part, and it was over pretty quick. It just feels like a pinch. They will inject the material used for the anesthesia through the IV. It will feel a bit cold, but will not hurt. You will be completely out in a matter of seconds. You will wake up a bit groggy, and they will give you some sort of juice/soda. They will keep you for observation (usually around 30-60 minutes). Then you can go home and EAT!!Good luck.

The preparation is the hardest part, mainly because you will need your bathroom constantly until you are cleaned out. I suggest you get a motel room by the hospital before you start the medication. You will be out for both procedures. Nowadays it is quite easy. Yes they go down your throat to look into your stomach but again the procedure is fairly easy. The results are usually known right away. If a biopsy is taken it will take some days to get the results back. You will be just fine I have had both tests numerous times and I was just fine. I didn’t like the bathroom trips but it is only a short time. Good Luck and God Bless You!

You should only need the the day of the procedure off. You will need the rest of the day to sleep off the effects of sedation. You are not asleep. You will be lightly sedated and then given Versed which produces amnesia so you will forget everything.

I have had both of these test done 5 different times & each time was easier.For the colonoscopy the bowel prep is important to eliminate the waste before the procedure. I usually Hold my nose & drink the stuff down & then it doesn’t taste so bad. They may give you a mild sedative before the test & then you won’t feel the discomfort. The endoscopy is definitely not a pleasant test but unfortunately sometimes necessary. I’ve always had a sedative to make me drowsy & they also numb your throat with this spray that they say tastes like bananas. (it doesn’t) But I’ve been awake for the procedure all but once. (they put me under after they got started because I tried to jump off the table & hit the Dr.) Your mom or dad can ask them to put you under totally because of your age. It actually feels like you are choking & gaging when they slide the scope down your throat. It doesn’t really hurt but it is not at all pleasant. i’ve had an endoscopy before and was only under MAC anesthesia (monitored anesthesia care), given Diprivan through my IV. are you sure they’ll put under general? general involves having a breathing tube put in and requires a lot of monitoring. under MAC you are totally asleep, but the medication they use is quick to reverse. as a nurse, it was really strange to become a patient, but now i have a greater understanding of what my patients go through.throwing up post anesthesia is not uncommon, but there are medications we give in order to combat the nausea. mild soreness in your throat and “downstairs” is normal because of the camera they insert.good luck hope everything goes well.

I had both of these done and I was actually awake for the procedure. I was what they call “conscious sedation”. They sedated me to the point I don’t remember either procedure. If you’re actually going under anesthesia this is even better. You go to sleep and when you wake up it’s all done. They don’t have to use heavy anesthesia as this is a very routing procedure and you don’t have to be asleep. If you wake up it’s actually no big deal they will just put you under again. You won’t even remember it. They said I tried to talk a few times but I don’t remember a thing. I felt no nausea afterwards and there was no throwing up. The enema the day before shouldn’t hurt as the tube is very small. Good luck.

It depends on what the doc found. If there were polyps, a low fiber diet for a week, then a high fiber diet. If you have diverticulosis without polyps (they are removed during the procedure) you need to start the fiber right away. Always drink lots of decaffeinated beverages, as the prep dehydrates your body. For bowel health, try to eat 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day fyi- the average american eats only 10 – 15 grams of fiber per day.

The Slurpee’s are ok so long as no red or purple. Avoid the caffeine. Aspirin will thin the blood so this is one you need to let them know about, so they are prepared in case of bleeding.
